I explicitly shoot my personal projects using the classic aspect ratio of the cinema. this allows me to tell larger stories, and often multiple stories, within a single shot. furthermore, it subconsciously prepares the viewer for the emotional responses that accompany the cinema, such as massive scenes, storytelling, human relationships, etc.
a candid shot of a single character focuses on that person, but introducing even a single other person changes the focus to the space between them. when fit into the cinematic aspect ratio, the subjects appear as characters on a stage, telling a story through their co-presence.
when man and nature are photographed together, it is dishonest to place man at an equal footing. this is an attempt to be truer to the landscapes that draw us outside in the first place.
to see a massive expanse, compress it through the lens, only to have to re-expand to something nearly as grand. a rejection of the notion that "you had to be there”.
Taking inspiration from the everyday, as seen on the daily commute on the Richmond Ferry.
